Memphis leaders have unleashed a whirlwind of activities. Two groups from MAF have traveled to Afghanistan, including a team with a doctor from St. Francis Hospital and a neonatal nurse from Methodist HospitalRusty Griffin and Mark Morris have each made separate trips to finalize plans for health and education projects.  A Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Memphis has been initiated by the U of M, has been translated and is in the hands of Minister Qanuni.  The Minister of Education, Yunis Qanuni met with our team and encouraged an ongoing partnership between the city of Memphis and Afghanistan.  Wali Abdi, an Afghan American from the University of Memphis has become a key person in the education arena as he works on the undertaking of curriculum development for the nation of Afghanistan.

Health Highlights

The next team from
Memphis will travel to Afghanistan on March 7th for 10 days.  During their time in country they will continue the medical lecture series at Maywand Hospital and conduct clinics in villages near the capital.  In addition a small team will travel to Herat, Afghanistan to continue developing projects in that province.  To date there has been very little done by NGO's in Herat and there are several excellent opportunities for expanding the work of the Memphis - Afghan group into that area.

Education Highlights

We are currently developing the Education leadership team, a “think tank” for community leaders with background and employment in education.  Their efforts will be directed toward Afghanistan’s new curriculum, provide training for the curriculum writers within the Interim government, and cooperate with other universities across America who are investing in the future of Afghanistan.
