March 2003 Update
Memphis -
Afghan Friendship
Summit
Existing
friendships have been strengthened and new relationships have been
forged. A great new
friendship is with the Memphis-based Afghan community.
Some of us recently had the surprising privilege of meeting these
newly arrived Afghan refugee families who have been relocated here in
Memphis. The
St. Francis
Hospital
medical team that left
March 7th was able to enjoy an Afghan dinner with some of
these new Afghan friends before their trip. What a great orientation to
Afghanistan!
This month, MAF also benefited from an excellent
front-cover edition of
the Memphis Flyer. Thanks to Bianca Phillips and the Memphis Flyer for
great coverage.
Thank you for your interest and your commitment to building bridges of
friendship for the future of the nation of
Afghanistan.
Health Highlights
The most recent MAF medical team has returned from a successful trip to
Kabul! The team consisted of
four physicians, one dentist, one nurse, a dental assistant, and four
non-medical workers. The physicians and dentist lectured in hospitals,
worked, and did rounds with Afghan professionals. Dr. Michelle Culbreth
of
Saint
Francis
Hospital
delivered more than 30
babies at the Malalai Women’s Hospital! The entire team participated
in a food distribution near
Kabul
where over 300 families
were given flour, oil, warm underclothes, a blanket, and a sleeping pad.
It was a joy to serve the people of
Afghanistan
and continue the
valuable relationships with our friends in the Interim government.
